Guides
Identify equipment rather than assuming model-standard fittings
Record the installed make, model, serial number and installation date for each system. Include later replacements or alterations and available service records. Equipment shown in a sales brochure may have been optional, removed or changed. Ask whether the policy treats each item as machinery, fitted equipment or another category before inferring the applicable limits.
Separate a failed system from other damage
A breakdown question should describe the reported cause and distinguish repair of the failed unit from damage to surrounding property. Ask about electrical, mechanical, wear and resulting-damage provisions using the actual wording. Loss of convenience or the cost of changing travel plans should not be assumed covered merely because a unit is listed in the vessel inventory.
Itemise access and replacement work
A repair estimate can include removal of joinery, lifting, transport, installation and testing as well as the component itself. Ask what work is necessary to restore the prior installation and what represents a capacity or technology upgrade. Provide the breakdown to the insurer and clarify depreciation or betterment questions before treating the full invoice as an accepted amount.
Documents and questions to prepare
- Installed-unit identifiers and dates.
- Service history and professional failure findings.
- Access, component, testing and optional-upgrade costs separated.
- Applicable machinery exclusions and settlement deductions.
Worked ownership scenario
A generator repair quote includes an upgraded replacement and changes to surrounding systems. The owner asks the repairer to distinguish restoration from improvement, then seeks the insurer's decision on the itemised scope. A single total does not explain which costs arise from the reported damage.
Turn the guide into a written insurance brief
Keep the relevant photographs, invoices, reports and correspondence together. Separate facts you can document from questions that remain unresolved. When requesting a decision, identify the vessel, the intended activity and the exact policy term you need clarified. Record who replied, when the response applies and whether an endorsement is required; a general brochure statement may not answer the specific question.
Record the policy wording and unanswered questions
Use the comparison worksheet to keep each requirement beside its document reference. Leave an item unresolved until the insurer has answered it.
Frequently asked questions
Does being fitted to the catamaran guarantee breakdown cover?
No. Inclusion in insured property and the causes of loss covered are different questions. Read the relevant machinery and exclusion provisions.
Are disrupted cruising plans automatically reimbursed?
Do not assume so. Ask whether any relevant expense or interruption benefit exists and what conditions and limits apply.
Sources and scope
Manufacturer links support identification and design context. Australian insurer document libraries are starting points for checking policy wording, not evidence of acceptance of this boat or activity. The checklists and examples are editorial guidance. Use the PDS version, schedule and endorsements that apply to your own policy; this guide does not rank insurers or provide an individual insurance recommendation.
